INTERVIEW & ARTICLES > JASON MEENTS INTERVIEW FEB 2007                   BACK
-ok Jason, How did you get interested in Illustration?
Well I have been drawing since I can remember and I know from my parents I was doing it even before I can remember. My parents' favorite story to share is when I created my first mural down the hallway wall at our house when I was 4. They always tell about the beautiful Ewok village I did with crayon... funny how all I remember is the scrub sponge and bucket I was given to scrub it off the wall with!

-Any special medium in Art that you enjoy other than Illustration?
Not really, I mostly stick to the pen, ink, and marker illustration work. I do some coloring digitally on my PC but that's about it.

-What comic book projects personal or professional have you worked on?
I have done a few personal books and a couple small independent ones. I had a comic strip in the school newspaper during college and had one published in the local paper when I was a senior in high school.

-What do you think makes a good comic book?
Great writing I think is really important if you don't have a story that keeps people wanting more it won't last very long. I think Dramatic art is equally important though. Now a days you have to put something out there to get peoples visual attention, you don't want them just looking past your book while it sits on the shelf along with tons of others.

-What inspires you to draw?
Wow, that is a pretty deep question. A lot of things inspire me to draw and create. Things I see, things I read, things I hear, inspiration can come from just about anything. I am often just struck with an idea for something.

-Does music inspire you while you're working on a piece of artwork?
I used to live near Chicago and spent a lot of nights downtown at the clubs, so I listen to a lot of Techno, House, Trance music while I work. I love the fast paced music with a really hard bass line. It really keeps me moving while I am working.

-Give us some details about who you are, and where you come from?
I grew up in Illinois just south of Chicago but I just last year moved out west to Colorado. I am a HUGE sports fan! I love my Cubbies and Bears but I am the biggest fan of the University of Michigan Football. My whole office/studio area is covered with player illustrations I have done, pictures taken while I was there for games or flags/banners! Like I said I am a HUGE fan. I spend a lot of time listening to music and watching movies when I am not drawing. I love the weather and the beautiful views out here in Colorado. If I ever see another cornfield it will be too soon!

-What movies catch your eye?
I own a couple hundred movies, so I guess a lot catch my eye! I really like almost every genre except those mushy chick flicks. A few of my all time favorites though... Sin City, Boondock Saints, Groove, Belly, Super Troopers, Van Wilder, How High, Slapshot, Rocky IV, Prefontaine, Blade trilogy, Spiderman movies, Punisher, Batman OK I will stop I could go on forever!

-Down to the nitty gritty, you're working on Tezlon: Glance of Time...how is that going?
It's going great I am very near finishing the inks on the first issue. Larry has already gotten me the script for #2. I love the characters in the series!

-What is the process you take in creating a comic book page?
I get the script from Larry then I read it through once trying to imagine how I see each panel. I then read it through again laying out thumbnails of the panel layouts and the angle or set up of the shot for each. Then I take those thumbnails and layout the pages to be penciled first just by laying out all the panels' size and shape. After that I go through and start roughing in whatever is going on in each panel. Then I start with the inking, using a lightbox and a handful of pens and markers. Finally I scan and send it all on to Larry to be lettered.

-Larry Lonsby Jr's Tezlon world is vast, how do you feel about working on one of the main Titles in the series?
Well...I really am pleased just working on the one series for now. I would hate for the Glance of Time to end but I would love to work on another Chapter in the Tezlon series if/when it does! Although I would hope some of the characters from the current series would be in it... like I said before I just love these characters!

-Are there any specific characters you enjoy in the series your working on?
My favorite to draw is Jaak Tate, although I do also like Maxx a lot too. I actually enjoy Mr. Ruiz and Johnny the bully who are side characters in Issue #1.

-Will you move on to another Tezlon series after the close of Glance of Time?
It will be a sad day when the Glance of Time series comes to a close but moving onto one of the other series titles would ease that grief a little I think.

-Any wise words for budding young artists?
I know it sounds lame but PRACTICE! Draw whenever, wherever, and whatever you can!!! I am finding myself drawing a lot of things and perspectives that I really had no interest in doing when I was in school and younger. It amazes me that my Art teachers actually did know what they were talking about when they told me I would need to know how to do it someday, however I can't say the same for my Algebra teacher!
